The Marler Media Art Awards were once again announced in 2018 with the theme “Space” – the Marler Video Art Award and the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD.  All national and international artists working with video or sound media were eligible to participate in these competitions.

The Video Art Prize, based at the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl, has been in existence since 1984, and the German Sound Art Prize, which was further developed into the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD, since 2002. The two media, which are primarily defined by video and sound, have many similarities: they are not only time-related, but in many video works the acoustic level is very important, and more and more sound works incorporate moving images. That is why the Marl Media Art Awards combine both competitions in an exhibition at the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl.

The EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD is presented by Kulturradio WDR 3, the Hören Foundation, and the European Soundart Association in cooperation with the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl to sound works that are distinguished by their artistic quality, space-related and space-characterizing sound creations, and acoustic and plastic form certainty. The winner of the EUROPEAN SOUNDART AWARD will be invited to use the prize money (7,000 euros) to create a site-specific work for Marl, which will also be shown in the exhibition. In addition, the jury selected seven sound artworks from the competition submissions for the exhibition.

The renowned Marl Video Art Prize is being awarded for the 18th time. This competition is organized by the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl. The submitted works should relate to space in terms of theme, form, or presentation. In this context, spatial reference also means avoiding linear narrative structures and using a different, non-linear temporal structure, for example through a loop in the video, which seems ideally suited to the exhibition situation in the museum. However, classic single-channel videos shown on a monitor or projected are still conceivable. Fourteen works have been selected for the exhibition and are competing for the 2018 Marler Video Art Prize with prize money of €5,000. The prize money will be used to purchase the winning video for the permanent collection of the Skulpturenmuseum Glaskasten Marl.
