Scaffold

A multi-channel installation based on fieldrecordings made with contact microphones at multiple points on the varied and various units at international building sites .
A Project to examine the urban sound created within scaffolds erected at  central sites of various cities.

Starting with the Main Central Train station in Vienna.
Each metal part  of the scaffold works as an audio receiver unit as well as an autonomous, or corresponding sound producing unit. Both sound sources get converted due to the acoustic properties of the material, such as shape etc. So if, for example, on one side of the scaffold an elevator is moved, or the wind blows into the racks, the sound is transmitted and automatically converted on its journey through the joints and racks untill it is eventually  recorded at the other side.
Recording  not only during daytime hours, but also at night and through changes in the weather, it is surprising to hear how the change in meteorological influences  are able to leave their distinct audio footprint both on and within the structure: another example of thisbeing an increase in the level of sunlight and the corresponding heat generation.
